Most business owners and professionals know that developing key relationships and partnerships within their community plays a pivotal role in their success and their business' success.  This is probably why, today, so many people are turning to networking as a means to making new connections.

People consider networking an important step to gaining success.  But, I disagree.  In fact, I've started to wonder if networking really gains you any success in terms of business.  Setting out to gain a contact, or merely to get a new business card, seems pointless to me.  And, making a contact only to see how they can serve me seems cold and sterile.

When I meet a new contact for my business, my goal is not to put their information in my address book, it's not to see what they can do for me, and it's not even to network with them.  It's to make a real connection.

I want to find out who this person truly is and what their business is truly about. I want to find out if our goals and missions are somehow synergetic and if a partnership could actually bring each of us more success.  

Making a real connection is not about what can they do for me…it's about how can we both serve each other best.  It's about whether each of our purposes align and how can we assist each other's communities in the long term. It's from this place that I have found real deals and partnerships occur.

However, very often, people allow opportunities for valuable partnerships to pass them up.  Many people feel intimidated to put themselves out there and hesitate when the right situation comes up.  Unfortunately, this discomfort can come across as disinterest rather than fear.  And, the very people whom these people meant to connect with may feel the only interest lies in what they can provide rather how they can partner together.

Pushing through these feelings of discomfort is essential in building successful connections. Sure it is uncomfortable, but the money lost will have a much more permanent affect in the long run. Don't let any opportunity pass you by.  Eliminate nervousness or intimidation by putting the attention toward the person with whom you want to connect.   Ask questions and follow-up.  Eventually, connecting will become second-nature and will naturally occur with everyone you meet.   

Another important factor is in the quality of the connections you make. You may know lots of people. But, if these acquaintances are not creating results for your business then there is no monetary value in their connection to you.   Are your business connections people who you can call on when you need someone to introduce you to a new market or the big players in that market? If not, it may be time to re-evaluate your process for establishing new connections.

Making key connections means having real relationships with influential people whom you can call on for help and that you serve some purpose to in return, as well.

Not this kind of "I'll call you when I need something" relationship.  This will never work.

For example, let's say you have the contact information for the CEO at Big Brand Manufacturing.  But, you have not spoken to him since you met him at a luncheon a year ago.  This person is of no value to you and your business. If you want to start a new business venture and need some promotional items made, it is doubtful this person will give you the big "friend-discount" you might want.

Not only must you create a genuine partnership with them, but for your contacts to be of any value to your business, you must learn to be of value to theirs.

As in anything which must bring good results, you need to have a good working plan on how you want to go about your affiliate marketing. It is always best to have a written plan which you must discipline yourself to follow. That does not mean that the plan will be rigid. Plans can always be adjusted as long as you remain focused on the end result which you anticipate from your affiliate marketing business.

The Affiliate Marketing niche is highly competitive and has a lot of experienced players in it. You therefore need to be creative when planning and designing your affiliate marketing program. Think inside the box, think above the box, think under the box, think outside the box. I have emphasized so much on thinking and box so that you will understand how important it is to be creative in your affiliate marketing program.

Another important point to always have in mind is the fact that your marketing must be targeted for it to be highly effective. Wide range marketing is directed at nobody in particular and cannot have the same excellent result as a targeted campaign.

It is said that "only those who are trained for the job, will be hired for the job". Simply put, you have to be properly trained in any field you want to dabble to if you really want to make money in that business. Attend quality trainings and read up on good e-books that will show you the exact steps you need to take in order to make money through affiliate marketing.

The internet is so interesting because it is a dynamic environment – it changes every time. What worked a few days ago may have become ineffective; this is another reason why you must gather a lot of current information in order to keep up with what is new on the internet.

There are so many good software and e-books out there that teach you a lot of good stuff about how to succeed in affiliate marketing. As recommended above, get yourself a coach who knows a lot about affiliate marketing and is actually making money in the niche. I love recommending that people get a coach because my experience (and the confirmation of others) have shown that a coach enables you to get to your success point quicker and cheaper.

He is the son of my niece, Jumoke and that makes me his Grand-aunt (lol). You see, it feels just like yesterday when I held Jumoke in my arms on the very day she was born and now she is a Mother!

 Lesson No.1 – Time flies and don’t despise small beginnings because they grow so fast into big deals.

Jumoke is such a very slim girl you could almost call her skinny. Her friends and cousins nickname her ‘Jumoke lepa’; that’s how slim she is. If you saw her, you won’t believe she brought forth this massive dude.

 Lesson No.2 – Your little idea can develop into enormous wealth if only you will nurture it and take action steps on it.

Jumoke’s Mum is a senior Nurse with over 30 years working experience and has raised 6 (six) children of her own; very well I would say. Although this is Jumoke’s first baby, her labour lasted just a little over one hour. You see, throughout her conception period, her mum kept giving her instructions on how to take care of herself, what foods to eat, when to be active, when to rest, the right sleep position etc. She obeyed and did all as soon as she was told.

In the last few days to the delivery day, her mum would call her and give definite exercise instructions. After a while, Jumoke would call back to say she had completed the exercise. Jumoke’s obedience and action taking, contributed to the fast labour/delivery process; despite Jumoke’s stature versus the baby’s size.

Lesson No.3 – You will always need a coach who has successfully done what you want to do. You must listen to your coach and take immediate action as instructed by the coach. You need to follow up and keep checking back with your coach to see that you are on the right track. If you do, nothing will be able to hold you down. You will succeed and make money no matter how much the odds are stacked against.

Notice how big, clean and fresh the baby is. He got a clean bill of health from the hospital and the mother is full of joy. A perfect, robust bundle of joy; that is what you get when you pay the price. Remember, there is always a price to pay before you can get the prize of a rosy life; before you can get that robust wealth. It might cost you money, it might cost you time, it will definitely cost you hard work; there is always a price to pay. Nothing good comes free; if it doesn’t cost you anything then it probably isn’t worth anything.  Trust me, this is always so, especially when it comes to making money.

You cannot imagine how happy I am to be writing this post. It might look like I dropped off the face of the earth cos you’ve not heard from me in a while. I’ve actually been back to school . What school, do you ask? That’s story for another day. Anyway, it was a very intensive course and I decided to make it with good grades so I gave it my all. That notwithstanding, I still apologise for having not been available for so long. Now let me tell you why I am so grateful to God that I am here now writing this post.

A short while ago, I wrote a post about a friend of mine who got back to life after receiving a doctor’s ‘death sentence’ that she was going to die of cancer. She recounted how she was able to reflect on her life and decided to contribute more to mankind after having been given a new lease of life. I read the report, felt moved by it and made a mental note to help people get better in life. But I did nothing.

Fast forward to October 1st, 2010. There I was in Abuja, enjoying the 50th Anniversary ceremony at the Eagle Square. We (my nephew and I) had plans to visit my nephew’s office which was just next door to the Ministry of Justice. We were only waiting for the right time to leave where we were seated. Do you know what happened? Right in front of my nephew’s office, the blast went off. We did not realise how close we were to being literarily being ‘blown away’ until after the ceremony. Then it dawned on me, I could have been wiped away just like that! What legacy would I have left? How many lives would I have left unimpacted?

I remembered how many people had expressed desire to be trained by me but couldn’t because ‘they could not afford my training‘ or because I was ‘too busy‘ with my own stuff. What would have become of that knowledge? What would have happened to those destinies that need to become self-employed through my mentorship? What would I have answered God for those whom He had destined me to help out of poverty? Then I remembered the story of my friend far away in America and I knew God was telling me something. I thanked God and prayed for forgiveness.

I have no choice but to come down from that pedestal and do the bidding of God. I have decided to coach as many people as are ready, almost free. I will let you know the full details shortly. I just needed to commit myself by writing this post so that I don’t back out. In the mean time, what do you want me to coach you on? Some people argue that money is the best reason why people start their own businesses. Their reason is that money takes the emotion out of business. Some other people say that flexibility is the best reason because it allows you to live your life in the manner that best suits you and your family. Yet some others say that following your passion is the true road to happiness. There is no end to this debate because each side of the argument plausible.

But then, I believe that all entrepreneurs have one thing in common; they all had a defining moment that sparked their decision. They all had that “ah-ha” moment that could not be ignored. They all had a sudden intuitive leap of understanding that would change their legacy. Usually, the “ah-ha” moment came as a result of a bitter experience. For some, it was a ridiculing event while for others it was a close brush with death. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to experience such an epiphany? 

One of my mentors once narrated her experience when she was diagnosed of breast cancer. It was a traumatic and painful experience for her. According to her, she was ‘poked, prodded, and slice’ as she had to go through a lot of tests, x-ray, etc. Thank God, at the end of it all, it was discovered that she did not have cancer after all.  Of course, she was glad that she was not going to die; but then something snapped inside of her which made her start her own business. Listen to her:

“Going through that breast cancer scare changed my life in many ways. You see, I’ve always wanted to start my own business …….. but I kept saying, “Someday. Someday I will start that new business.” I’m not sure what kept holding me back before the cancer scare. I think the fact that I loved my job. And that, even as a CEO, I was able to enjoy quality time with my husband and three kids …… But after the scare, the need to create this new business and help other working moms have the lifestyle they wanted and deserved was overwhelming. I could not “NOT” do it.

Three months after the cancer scare, her business was running. She readily shares what she the most valuable lessons she learnt along the way because she believes it will help you jump start any business.  

1. Less is more. 

A friend of mine recently left her corporate job to start her own marketing consulting firm. The first thing she did was find office space. I asked her why she was doing it. She told me that, with the real estate market in the dumps, space was a bargain. So she was able to rent space for $1,500 a month that normally went for three grand.

But she did not stop there. She bought a desk, chair, filing cabinets, and a couch. She spent $5,000 before she wrote a sales letter or had a website built. After two months of trying, she finally landed her first client. That client is paying her a $2,000 a month retainer. You do the math.

I have a four-bedroom house and three kids who have their own rooms. I do not have a library, den, or office. Still, I did not go out and rent space. I converted my rarely used dining room into my office. (Heck, we’re kitchen people anyway.) It overlooks a golf course, and I find it very conducive to writing. When I need a change of scenery, I take my laptop and sit out by my pool. I did not buy filing cabinets or print business cards. I have a really good computer and I understand the value of knowing how to use it to its fullest.

 2. Work on your business every day.

When you are starting a brand-new business that is going to be your livelihood, there are no weekends. You don’t get the day off because it is your wedding anniversary or your kid’s birthday. You have to make sacrifices.

Now does this mean I missed Connor’s ninth birthday? Of course not. But after he went to bed that night, I worked. I worked until I finished everything I needed to do. Sure, the goal of having your own business is to get it to the point where you are living your desired lifestyle. But this does not happen overnight.

You must take your business seriously. For this very reason, I vowed that I would not work in my PJs. I still get up and go to the gym first thing in the morning. I then shower, dress, and dive into my work. I don’t stay in bed an extra hour or talk on the phone. I treat my business with respect — as I have always treated someone else’s business that I was running.

I know far too many “entrepreneurs” who are still in their pajamas at 2:00 in the afternoon. These are the guys who are always asking why they are not doing as well as their competitors.

3. Know your market intimately.

It’s best if you are a member of your target market. This is the road I have taken. I knew what it was like to be an executive before I had kids, and I have been a working mom for 11 years. I honed the new skills I needed over those 11 years. I am now in the top percentile of highly paid working moms.

If you are not personally in your target market, there are several things you can do to get yourself up to speed. Start with these:

* Study your competition. Understand what they do and figure out how you can do it faster, better, and cheaper.

* Use Amazon to get insider information about your prospective customers. Read reviews on products similar to the ones you are thinking of developing. Decide how you could address buyers’ concerns and enhance the features and benefits they like.

These lessons alone will help you make more money and gain more flexibility in your business. Yes, my epiphany spoke to my passion. However starting and cultivating a profitable business is important. And managing that business while procuring flexibility adds tremendous value to my life.”

So folks, as you can see, all three sides of the triangle – money, passion and flexibility should be considered in starting and running your business. As your business grows, the priorities will shift. Some days, all three may share in equality. But how will you ever find out if you don’t start? Stop procrastinating, take action, START NOW!

It is half year again and a lot of us have not even done anything about goal setting; not to talk of achieving it.  Majority set goals at the beginning of every year and by the end of January not much is done. Unfortunately, so many people give up at this stage and look forward to the beginning of another year when they hope to write yet a new set of goals and resolutions.

But do you have to wait that long? No. You can set a new goal right now and I bet you’ll have more success this time. Why am I so sure? I am so very sure because I am going to introduce a new method which will make it easier and more fun to achieve your goal(s). You see, the most important step towards achieving your goals is writing it down. Almost everyone knows that. But we are taking that a step further. I invite you to write you goals on this blog. What that does is it makes you more accountable to yourself.  It is there and you have a sense of commitment to it. Did I mention before that you need emotional commitment to help you achieve your goals fast? Yes, you do. Writing your goals openly on the blog gives you an emotional commitment that you have said it, you have to keep to your words. One thing though, you do not have to put your full names on your post. I was reading a mail I got from Jeremy Palmer about someone who detailed the analysis of his first failed business. Rather than complain and walk away defeated, he took the time to share his business statistics and experience.

This message made me think a lot about what we talk about when we get invited to seminars and conferences. We spend a lot of time talking about our successful businesses, but rarely talk about the failures before those successes.

I agree with Jeremy that behind every successful business is the collective experience of many failures. Personally, each of my failures taught me something that eventually helped me succeed. Failure is looked down on in almost every society. People don’t like to admit their mistakes. It’s much easier to talk about what you did right (and sound smart) than it is to share what you did wrong.

Henceforth, I’ve decided to be talking more openly about my failures, and what I learned from them.  I hope that this open dialogue about my experiences will help you realize that it’s okay to fail – as long as you learn from your mistakes.

Click on the ‘Sign Up Now’ button.  Pick a username and put in your correct email address because that is where they are going to send your password, so make sure you make no mistake.

Click the ‘I have read and agree to….’ box.   Make sure you click ‘Gimme a Blog’. On the next page, Click ‘Sign Up’ If the username or email address you gave had been picked before, you will have to go back and supply another one that is available.

After choosing, click ‘NEXT’.  NOTE that you cannot use signs or symbols in your username; you can only use letters and numbers. If you use signs or symbols, the username will not be accepted and you will have to go back and pick another one. If your username is accepted, you will be given a blog domain address which will be http://www.yourusername.wordpress.com e.g. http://www.imanigeria.org

You will get a confirmation that your blog has been set up but that you need to activate it. A mail would have been sent into your email address which you supplied them. Open your email and click on the activation link. Immediately you activate your account, you will be given a password for accessing your blog.

Once you retrieve your password, go to the WordPress homepage and log in to your blog’s Dashboard. If you want to log in straight to your own dashboard, open a window and type:   http://www.yourusername.wordpress.com/wp-admin

Click on ‘Users’. Go to ‘Your Profile’ and fill in your information. Scroll down to where it says ‘About Yourself’ and write a few words about yourself, what you do etc. Make sure you change your password to something you can remember and click ‘Update Profile’.  Next time you log in, you will of course have to use your new password.

I know I promised to send you the Internet Bizplan ebook as soon as I got to Lagos, but unfortunately I fell really sick and had to just take time out to rest. You see, my sickness did not just start after I came to Owerri. It actually started about a week before the Internet for Job Seminar in Owerri on April 28th.

On Thursday April 22nd, I left home hale and hearty; in fact I was bubbling in good health or so I thought. I had gone to a few places and was on my way back home. I was driving myself and was on the highway when I just blanked out. It was the grace of God that resuscitated me and I had to be hospitalized. It was a traumatic time and even while lying there in the hospital bed, receiving blood transfusion, I was thinking of you guys expecting me in Owerri. I tried to get someone to stand in for me, but the person was already booked for another seminar – good guys are almost always booked

To God’s glory, I was discharged from the hospital on Monday evening (with strict warnings to stay in bed) and I did stay in bed – until Tuesday. I attempted to arrive Owerri Tuesday evening but couldn’t make it so I left with the first Arik flight from Lagos on Wednesday morning. As you know, the conference took the whole day. I came into the Hall of Mercy straight from the airport; I hadn’t taken breakfast so I couldn’t use my medication and I sat there all day! I don’t even know how I was able to stand up to say anything. If you had really observed, my steps were unsteady.

Next morning again, I was back on the plane to Lagos. So what happened? I relapsed of course and everyone was angry with me, including my doctor. My husband actually forbid me opening any laptop in the house, so I became ‘eat and sleep‘ personality. It was really nice to be pampered and I decided to stay alive . That was why I’ve not been able to respond to your mail until now.  Pardon me.

I am now back at work because I have been anxious to send you the promised ebook and also because I have to be at a very important event tomorrow. The Info Marketers Association is having her first conference and I have been honored to give a paper there; God has favoured me to be healthy enough to grace the occasion.

In online business, when we talk about ‘Market’ what do we mean? What actually is a market?  A market is a particular segment of people who have a common need or desire i.e. a group of people that want or need the same thing. They must have the capacity to pay for that need and they must be ready to actually buy something to satisfy that want or need. It is only when people are ready to buy from you that you can make money online.

When I talked about ‘niche’ and ‘micro-niche’ in my previous post, what did I mean? A niche is just a subset (division or detachment) of the market while a micro-niche is a subset of a niche. Let’s look at a company here in Nigeria as an example. There are a group of people who are interested in the ‘Chi’ company and they will be a large number of people because ‘Chi’ makes a lot of products like fruit juice, milk products, poultry, confectionery, etc.

But there is a smaller group of people that are interested in only the Chivita range of fruit juice. Chivita Juice would be a niche out of the large Chi market. Still again, there are a smaller group of people that are interested in only one particular juice; maybe they are only interested in Chivita Apple Juice. This will be the micro-niche.  People interested in Chivita Apple Juice represent a micro-niche within the overall niche of people interested in Chivita Juice, which is within the market of people interested in the ‘Chi’ company

I digress. Let me explain the word ‘phrase’ to you because we are going to be using it a lot in this coaching. Usually, when people go to the internet to search for anything, what they do is to type in a phrase into the search box.  For example, if you want to learn how to make money on the internet, you’ll go to Google and type “how to make money online” or “make money online“. What you have just typed in is what we call a “phrase”. Phrases are very important in your niche market research because it tells you how people are searching for products/services in your niche.  

Some phrases are quite useful because people use them frequently more than other ones, when doing their searches online.  Usually, these are phrases people use when they are actually looking to buy something and we call them ‘buying phrases’. They are commercially viable. The phrases that people use when they are looking for free content are not really profitable, so we say they are ‘bad phrases’.

Individuals or smaller sized businesses who cannot afford big advertising budget, are able to target a specific group of people (niche or micro niche) if they focus on keyword phrases that the smaller group (niche, micro niche) are interested in.

Hello everyone,

How has it been? Hope you all are having a great time. I meant to be posting here everyday, but the past two (2) days have been quite hectic.

On Thursday, I went to see my mum who is hosting my nephew’s family from Abuja; they’ll be around for the next two weeks. One thing led to the other and I had to stay way beyond the time I planned.  You see, my mum is only 87 years old and sometimes demands attention like a baby, if not more.  Well, I stayed and greatly enjoyed myself. It was a good rewinding experience and I left the place quite relaxed. I had almost forgotten what joy little children could be with their innocent statements. Shout out to Mayowa and Fisayo Wellington from Abuja! I had to work through the night in order to make up for lost time (not the ideal thing to do).

On Friday, all roads led to Iperu-Remo for the burial ceremony of late Alhaji Nurudeen Omidiya, the amiable father of our highly revered brother, Mofopefoluwa Joseph.  The journey was quite smooth and the party very nice. You know, the right crowd – classy but not snobbish. We had a swell time.  We got back to Lagos a little before 6pm and I just switched off for the week; plus I was still tired from my sleepless night.

This is the first Saturday in April so we had to go to the Prayer City for our monthly program called Power Must Change Hands. It was quite a spirit-filled program and I was greatly blessed. I came back from the program and had a nice nap.  This is me after the nap, writing this blog.  Well, enough of me. Let’s go back to the coaching!

Do you know you should start your market research within yourself? To make money online, you can brainstorm ideas – look at things that you have passion for, something that you are knowledgeable about; a product that you are using/have used before; or a field in which you have good experience – you might find a niche there.  If you choose something you are passionate or knowledgeable about, the whole process goes quite smooth and enjoyable for you.

I also recommend that you always have a small notebook with you anywhere you go. You’ll be surprised how ideas might just pop into your head at odd times. If you don’t write it down at that very moment, it might be gone completely by the time you get home and you know what? It could have been a million naira (or dollar) niche. So always carry a notebook. Even if the idea that pops into your head sounds silly to you, never mind; just write it down.This is one of the secrets of those who make  money online.

You want to look at magazines, both online and offline.  Go to magazine stands where they have foreign magazines on display and browse through the magazines.  Is there any common topic on all their front pages? More importantly, look at the advert sections. What are people advertising about? If companies are paying money to put advert on those things, then there are definitely markets for them.  How popular are the adverts? What class of advert are there – is a lot of money being spent on those adverts?

Next go on the internet and look at online magazines.  Search different categories of magazines on the magazine websites. I recommend that you go to www.amazon.com; www.e-how.com www.shopping.com and www.ebay.com. There are so many others, but don’t overwhelm yourself, work with these ones. If there is a magazine, there is a market. But you don’t want to just jump into the market like that otherwise, competition (the well-established merchants; the money bags) will stifle you. You need to research down to micro-niches.

There is a four-part concept that guides a well planned business. The first part of this concept is Market Research. This is the most crucial aspect. Like I said previously, this is where 95% people make mistake when they start an online business. It is the Market Research mistakes that make people waste time and money on unprofitable markets or niches.

It is important to find out if there is a market and if the market is actually interested in buying anything. Next, we need to find out what type of things they are willing to buy before we spend precious time and money on product development, etc.

The second part of the concept is Traffic. Why is traffic important? It’s because if you cannot get anyone to come to your website, you will never be able to sell anything. You may have the best product online but you will not make money unless you get people to see it. Therefore, the  sensible thing to do after establishing your market is to find out if you’ll be able to generate enough traffic that will enable you make money in that market.

I shall be showing a couple of methods you can use to generate traffic without spending money.  Of course, there are other methods that will require you to spend money, but you don’t have to do those until you start making money from the free traffic you’ll be getting.

After traffic, the third part is called Conversion.  Conversion is when you get the traffic that arrives at your site to take some sort of action. It could be that you want them to buy something, to opt-in to your list or to access information. There are so many strategies you can use to get conversion e.g. copywriting, video, audio, etc. We will be looking at these in detail.

The fourth and final part of the concept is the Product. After you have figured out that the market is interested in buying a product; that you can drive enough traffic to make money in the market and that you can really get the market to take your desired action, the next move is for you to focus on developing a product.

The good thing here is that you will use the market to tell you what type of product they want to buy.  Sad enough, most wannabes start with this last leg and that’s why they usually end up wasting money and time on products that nobody wants.  So please, follow me as I show you step by step how to be successful in your online business. You must buy a domain name and you must host that domain name.  For the remaining steps, you can decide to spend time instead of money.

 Another point is that there is a sequence to setting up an online business, no matter which.  If you don’t start with the correct step, there will be a glitch along the way. Each step of internet marketing demands technicality and you need to learn how to do them properly.  Your starting point must be Market Research. This is the most crucial thing but unfortunately, this is where 95% of people mistakes are made when they start an online business.

 We are going to be focusing a lot on Market Research because it forms the basis of every other aspect of your online business. For example, you should not just pick a domain name because you like the sound of it or because it is something that just catches your fancy.
